10 Signs You May Have a Hidden Water Leak
Water leaks aren't always obvious. While a burst pipe or dripping tap is easy to spot, some leaks can occur behind walls, underneath floors, around bathrooms or within your plumbing system without any visible sign of water.
A small leak that goes unnoticed can eventually cause water damage, mould, deterioration of building materials and unnecessarily high water bills. Knowing what to look for can help you identify a potential problem before it becomes a much larger repair.
1. An Unexplained Increase in Your Water Bill
One of the easiest signs to notice is a sudden increase in your water usage or water bill without a corresponding change in how much water your household normally uses.
If your habits haven't changed but your water consumption has increased, there could be a leak somewhere within your plumbing system.
2. Damp or Discoloured Areas
Keep an eye out for unexplained damp patches, staining or discolouration on walls, ceilings or floors.
Water marks can sometimes indicate a leak behind a wall, underneath flooring or from plumbing connected to a bathroom, kitchen or other wet area.
3. Musty or Damp Smells
A persistent damp or musty smell can be another warning sign.
If an area of your home smells damp even though there is no obvious source of water, moisture may be collecting somewhere that you cannot see.
4. Mould or Mildew
Mould can develop when an area remains damp for an extended period.
While mould can have many causes, unexplained or recurring mould around bathrooms, walls, ceilings or other areas may indicate an underlying moisture problem.
5. Low Water Pressure
A noticeable change in water pressure can sometimes indicate a plumbing issue.
If water pressure suddenly drops and there doesn't appear to be an issue with the local water supply, it may be worth having your plumbing system checked.
6. Sounds of Running Water
Hearing water running when all taps, toilets and appliances are turned off can be a warning sign.
Take a moment to listen around your property. Unexplained sounds of running or dripping water may indicate a concealed leak.
7. Warped or Damaged Flooring
Water underneath flooring can cause materials to swell, warp or deteriorate over time.
If flooring begins changing shape or feels different underfoot without an obvious explanation, there could be moisture underneath.
8. Peeling Paint or Bubbling Surfaces
Moisture behind walls or ceilings can cause paint to bubble, peel or deteriorate.
These changes shouldn't automatically be assumed to be a leak, but unexplained deterioration can be a reason to investigate further.
9. Areas That Stay Wet
If a particular area around your property repeatedly appears wet or damp despite there being no obvious reason, there may be an underlying plumbing or drainage issue.
Pay particular attention to areas around bathrooms, kitchens, laundries, toilets and external plumbing.
10. Your Water Meter Keeps Moving
If you have turned off all taps and water-using appliances but your water meter continues to register water usage, it may indicate that water is being used somewhere within the property.
If you're unsure what you're seeing, a plumber can help investigate whether there is a leak within the plumbing system.
What Should You Do If You Suspect a Leak?
The earlier a leak is identified, the easier it can be to prevent further damage.
If you notice unexplained moisture, damp smells, changes in water pressure or an increase in water usage, it is worth investigating rather than waiting for the problem to become more obvious.
