Can Animals Chew Through Water Pipes? Finding the Cause of a Hidden Water Leak
Water leaks aren't always caused by worn-out fittings, faulty connections or ageing plumbing. Sometimes, the cause is something much less expected.
During a recent plumbing investigation, our team was called out to locate the source of a water leak. After tracing where the water was coming from, we discovered chew marks on a water pipe, consistent with damage caused by an animal.
While we couldn't confirm exactly what animal was responsible, the damage had compromised the pipe and caused a leak.
It's a good reminder that when a water leak appears, finding and fixing the source is just as important as dealing with the visible water damage.
How we found the cause of the leak
When investigating a water leak, the first step is to work out where the water is originating and identify the likely cause.
In this case, our team investigated the affected area and traced the leak back to a section of damaged pipework. On closer inspection, we found clear chew marks on the pipe.
The damage showed that the pipe had been physically chewed, creating a weak point that allowed water to escape. Although the exact animal couldn't be identified, rodents and other animals can sometimes damage accessible pipework in roof spaces, wall cavities and other concealed areas.
Without investigating properly, damage like this can easily go unnoticed until a leak becomes apparent.
Can animals really damage plumbing pipes?
Yes. Animals can chew or gnaw on accessible pipework, particularly in concealed areas where they can move around undisturbed.
Potential problem areas include:
Roof cavities and ceiling spaces.
Wall cavities and service areas.
Underfloor spaces.
Areas around pipe penetrations and other openings where animals may gain access.
The risk depends on the type of pipe, its location and the animal involved. Not every leak is caused by animal damage, which is why a proper inspection is important before deciding on the right repair.
What are the warning signs of a hidden water leak?
A damaged pipe can leak for some time before the source becomes obvious. Keep an eye out for:
Unexplained water stains on ceilings or walls.
Damp insulation or moisture in a roof cavity.
Dripping sounds when water is being used.
Unexpected increases in your water bill.
Water appearing in areas where there is no obvious plumbing fixture.
If you notice these signs, it's worth investigating promptly. A concealed leak can damage building materials and insulation if left unresolved.
Why finding the source matters
Simply wiping up water or repairing the visible damage won't solve the problem if the pipe is still leaking.
A proper plumbing investigation helps identify the source so the damaged section can be repaired or replaced appropriately. Depending on the circumstances, it may also be worth checking for other signs of damage and addressing any animal access points to help reduce the chance of a similar issue occurring again.
If you suspect a leak, it's best to have it assessed before the damage spreads. If safe and practical, turn off the water supply to the affected area or the property's main supply while waiting for assistance.
